City is hiring a Community Advocate
A contract opportunity from October 2008 to May 2009 for West LRT Project

The West LRT Office is currently undertaking an engineering predesign, which will be accompanied by a public engagement process.

The public engagement plan recently developed in collaboration with surrounding community representatives, has identified the opportunity for a community advocate to provide technical opinion to six community committees specifically related to stations, station surroundings, traffic and detours, transit integration, bus routes, noise walls, landscaping, urban design and community parking. Deal for new school 'queue-jumping'
Robert Remington, Calgary Herald, Published: Wednesday, September 17, 2008

Bronconnier owns six lots at 3304-3320 17th Ave. S.W. He purchased five of the lots in 1999 as alderman, two years before he became mayor. He later added a sixth lot, the site of a small house. He also owns seven lots on 10th Avenue S.W. near 19th Street, two blocks west of another planned west LRT station. The values of those could be negatively affected by an elevated line at that location. More

Holding public consultations on the next phase of the city's controversial west LRT expansion is a small victory leading toward a proper process, albeit muted. More

Tracks must be laid for better process
Calgary Herald, Published: Sunday, June 15, 2008

Before council pats itself on the back for having passed a final alignment for the proposed
west LRT expansion, it should remember the exercise failed to get broad community
consensus and succeeded only in showing how good the city is at bad planning.

Negotiations for the proposed route were fraught with difficulty from the start, when the city
rammed through a 25-year-old alignment at the first meeting after last fall's election. They
did so with no community input.

Some aldermen expressed concern at the time, such as Ald. Bob Hawkesworth, who felt the
rushed approval didn't allow council to do its due diligence. Ald. Druh Farrell believed the
decisions were being made in isolation. Both were correct, but couldn't convince their council
colleagues to implement a better process. More

LRT fight finally over
Council rejects bid to bury $700M west leg

Published: Tuesday, June 10, 2008

City council has finalized the alignment for the west leg of the LRT, paving the way for the $700-million project to go to tender this fall.

"It's high time we got on with it," Ald. Gord Lowe said.

Attempts by Ald. Joe Connelly to make last-minute changes to the route -- including running the entire line underground along 17th Avenue -- were rejected by his colleagues. More

Not too late to fix LRT plan
Calgary Herald, Published: Monday, June 09, 2008

The west LRT debate deserves to be derailed today when it comes before council
because aldermen are being rushed into making a final decision on the wrong alignment.

Nor will the city be sure to get the alignment right until aldermen implement a proper
process for making such a major infrastructure decision.

Council should send the matter back to committee. There are several other viable
alternatives on the table -- including burying more parts of the line -- that at least merit
an independent feasibility study. More
